Ship Security Officer (SSO)

Radio Officer (R/O)
R/O reports to the Master.
Communication equipments are under direct authority of the Master, R/O must act only in accordance with Master’s instructions.

Responsibilities -
1. Keep international hours of watch according to the area.
2. Keep watch during distress (do not switch off the station unless traffic is cleared).
3. On receipt of any distress signal, immediately inform the Master (note – distress messages must be attended on 24 * 7 basis).
4. Receive/transmit messages only on behalf of Master (note – maintain absolute secrecy of messages, do not show messages to anybody except Master).
5. If Master issues an order contrary to the requirement of international telegraphic regulations, draw Master’s attention prior to sending the message.
6. Receive weather messages and navigational warnings.
7. Switch ON auto alarm when off-duty.
8. Monitor local radio stations when approaching a port.
9. Maintain inventory of all communication equipments, stores, spares and publications.
10. Ensure cleanliness of Radio Room and maintain radio equipments.
11. Supervise repairs to all communication equipments.
12. Perform other duties as assigned by Master (depending on situation).

Additional responsibilities –
1. Act as Master’s administrative assistant (eg. assist Master in preparing reports).
2. Control purchase of food supplies and provisions.
3. Maintain account of victualling allowance (on behalf of the Master).
4. Guide and supervise cook and mess-boys.
